What Is Cheilosis?

Cheilosis is a condition where the corners of the mouth rupture and cause inflammation and pain on the sides of the mouth, this can occur on one side or both. Cheilosis is also called cheilitis and it usually causes cracks and cracks on both sides.

Cheilosis is a disease caused by a fungus, this fungus is known as Candida. This occurs due to the accumulation of yeast growth in the corners of the mouth, and a condition or disease called cheilitis or cheilosis is quite common in those who wear their teeth incorrectly. Dentures can not separate between the lower and upper jaw with the right distance, for those who do licking, brushing teeth usually tends to develop it.

In addition, people with health problems such as diabetes, anemia and lack of immunity, they are very susceptible to cheilosis.

To be more clear about cheilosis or cheilitis, let’s look at how the symptoms occur.

The Cheilosis Symptoms

The main symptoms of cheilosis are redness, pain, cracked skin at the corners of the mouth. Usually the corners of the mouth are crusty, bloody or scaly. A person in certain conditions has difficulty opening his mouth to speak, or eat. If you experience something like that, then chances are it is cheilosis.

If you are worried about what you are suffering from, try to contact your doctor to get certainty about what you are suffering from. Also make sure you are not experiencing other diseases or infections around the mouth. Well, in a case like this you also have to know the causes of cheilosis so that it is easier to identify it. In addition, knowing the cause can also make it easier for us to treat cheilitis more specifically.

Diagnosis

First, your dentist or doctor will check if you are wearing dentures. If you wear dentures, they should check to see if your dentures fit properly, and may ask about your oral habits. For example, do you often lick the corners of your mouth and so on. They also sometimes have to check your blood to see if you have anemia, or an immune deficiency. Next, your dentist will also test the intake or culture from the area for bacterial and yeast infections.

Expected Duration

After the underlying cause of your cheilosis, then the healing will be easy to handle and hopefully the healing can be fast.

Prevention

If you wear dentures, then visit your denture regularly to make sure that your dentures fit and can support your face properly. Avoid licking and rubbing the sides of your mouth.

How to Treat Cheilosis

Treatment to cure cheilosis depends on the underlying cause of the cheilosis or cheilitis. If the cheilosis is the result of improper fitting of dentures or braces, then adjusting your dentures or braces can relieve it.

If the cause is thumb sucking or other oral habits that cause this to happen, then it is important to prevent yourself from these habits so that the skin at the corners of your mouth is clean and does not become a place for fungal growth.

If the cause of cheilosis is an oral infection, your doctor may prescribe an antifungal cream or an antibiotic, which is applied to the damaged skin until your skin heals.

However, if the cause of the cheilosis you are experiencing is due to nutritional deficiencies or because of cases of anemia, then the solution is to take dietary supplements, and dietary changes, this will help restore the cheilitis you are experiencing.
