Does Drinking Alcohol Cause Arthritis?

Does Drinking Alcohol Cause Arthritis? Arthritis is an inflammatory disease in the joints and arthritis is marked by swelling, pain and stiffness in the joints.

Speaking of arthritis, there are differences in the results of expert research, some of them say that drinking alcohol can reduce the bad effects of rheumatoid arthritis, there are also studies that say that consuming alcohol can worsen the condition of a person with arthritis that is in suffering.

Does Drinking Alcohol Cause Arthritis, How It is Happen

There are studies that say that drinking alcohol in moderation can reduce the risk of inflammation of the joint or rheumatoid arthritis (RA), this is a form of arthritis related to the joints.

If someone consumes alcohol in a low level, it is associated with a low level of pro-inflammatory mediator such as C-Reactive Protein, Tumor Necrosis Factor-α (TNF-α) Receptor 2, and Interleukin-6. Although shown like that, usually people with sick conditions he will tend to drink a little alcohol. But we also have to review, what if he is completely avoiding alcoholic drinks, will this be better for the health of rheumatoid arthritis? If indeed this makes it better, then avoiding alcohol at all is something to do. In fact, many scientific studies show that alcohol has a bad effect on health, so avoiding a total illicit drink is the right step to prevent various diseases from the body.

In fact, recently there is a study saying that the low level of disease due to drinking alcohol in the amount of moderation is not due to the effects of alcohol, but because someone whose disease conditions are serious, disabled, commercial, and poor quality of life tend to stop drinking, or minimize drinking . That is why, if someone stops totally from alcohol also has a better opportunity and potential than those who drink alcohol in moderation.

In addition, drinking wine is said to reduce the risk of osteoarthritis. This is a progress because the ingredients in the wine are called resveratrol, this material is known to be useful as an anti -inflammatory, so it is useful in suppressing arthritis. However, if you have experienced arthritis or are experiencing this disease, alcohol can endanger you.

How Alcohol Consumption Impacts Arthritis?

We’ve already mentioned that alcohol can have an impact on arthritis, but how does drinking this alcohol affect arthritis? Let’s look at the following reviews.

According to the American College of Rheumatology, a person who suffers from arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis and consumes antimetabolites (medicines that interfere with metabolism of natural substrates) should limit drinking alcohol, this is to prevent liver damage. However, further research is needed to determine whether the same results apply to all patients or vice versa.

But scientifically, alcohol has no beneficial and detrimental effects on people with rheumatoid arthritis. Experts say that alcohol consumption is linked to drugs used for arthritis. This drug sometimes reacts with alcohol or sometimes does not react. In addition, it is also associated with the amount of alcohol consumed.

Some of the detrimental effects of alcohol that are clearly visible are in patients with gout, this is a type of arthritis but is caused by excess uric acid in the blood.

In addition, foods and drinks that contain lots of purines (aromatic compounds), such as beer, liquor, wine, are known to trigger gout attacks. There is also alcohol made from grains such as beer, which contains gluten which is known to trigger rheumatoid arthritis. Here we know clearly that people with gout should not drink alcohol. However, for people with arthritis, there are still many pros and cons, so there is still a need for more research to find valuable knowledge.

The Negative Effects Of Alcohol On Arthritis?

Some medications used to treat arthritis are known to be incompatible with alcohol. The difficulty of alcohol or the adverse effects of alcohol on people with arthritis depends on the type of medication used to treat RA.

For example: Drugs used for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, this can increase the risk of stomach bleeding or stomach ulcers if the patient drinks alcohol. In addition, antimetabolite drugs, if it is taken together with alcohol, can cause a high risk of liver damage in patients, this liver damage can change to the degree of liver fibrosis.

Liver damage in patients who drink alcohol is the result of these substances (alcohol and drugs) being metabolized in the liver. So, if a person consumes both substances at the same time then the risk of liver damage is very large because the liver puts great pressure on metabolizing these two substances.

So, an experienced doctor will usually prescribe mild drugs first or drugs with minimal side effects.

Side effects of alcohol are also associated with sleep disturbances, thereby reducing the quality and quantity of sleep. While Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease that is also associated with sleep disorders. Thus, alcohol use can cause joint pain, depression, and may reduce physical activity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Therefore, we recommend that you leave alcohol for your better health. This is one of the reasons why a religion like Islam forbids its adherents to stay away from this drink.

Alcohol is a sugar-rich, calorie-rich beverage, daily consumption can increase body fat, gain weight, and worsen RA.

If you consume alcohol regularly, it can increase fat accumulation in the body, reduce blood supply to bone tissue, and can cause necrosis or cell death.

Another side effect of drinking alcohol is that it causes the body to become dehydrated, this can lead to a reduction in joint lubrication and make joints worse. In addition, a very bad side effect of alcohol is that it can reduce the body’s nutrition, lower the immune system and in turn can worsen arthritis.

Are There Any Benefits In Consuming Alcohol?

According to the American Heart Association, consuming small amounts of alcohol is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease. But larger studies over the past few decades suggest that the ill effects of drinking alcohol far outweigh the benefits.

So, for those of you who like to drink alcohol, don’t be complacent with the small benefits you get, because drinking alcohol also has a fairly large bad effect and harms the body. It is increasingly clear that this drink is classified as an unlawful drink which must be avoided for the welfare of the body.

Even what we mentioned above – about the benefits of alcohol in moderation against arthritis – is something that is not yet clear. Experts also disagree on this point. So, the point is to stop drinking alcohol for those who drink it often is the path to better health.
