The Crown Daisy is a plant with the name Glebionis coronaria. It is a flowering and ornamental plant in the daisy family and is synonymous with life in the Mediterranean. This plant has been planted in East Asia, America, especially North America. Apart from being a flowering ornamental plant, Crown Daisy is also a delicious vegetable when cooked. Apart from being known as Crown Daisy, she is also known by several other names such as Chrysanthemum greens, Edible chrysanthemum, Garland chrysanthemum, Chop suey green, Mirabeles, Antimonio, Japanese-green, Kikuna, Moya, Crown marigold, Garden chrysanthemum, Crowndaisy, and Crown Daisy ‘Primrose Gem’.

The flowering plant known as the Crown Daisy is a hairless perennial plant that grows upright with multiple branches. The flowers are yellow and white and the buds are grouped in small flower heads and the leaves have a distinctive aroma, which is why many use them as vegetables or are eaten as fresh vegetables. This specimen produces flowers whose characteristic is yellow in the middle, and some of the flowers are totally yellow. The yellow flower of the crown daisy plant, when it reaches maturity, it will turn into small fruit with hundreds of seeds inside. Usually, ripe fruit will fall and be carried by insects everywhere and one day it will germinate and be ready to become a new crown daisy plant candidate.

This ornamental plant with beautiful yellow flowers grows in temperate to slightly cold climates. It is a plant that contains many nutrients essential for health. Among them are chlorogenic acid, carotene, potassium, flavonoids, minerals and vitamins, and rich in antioxidants. The benefits of consuming crown daisy leaves are as a medicine to fight weight, reduce the risk of cancer, provide antioxidant protection, prevent kidney stones, cellulite, cardiovascular problems, bloating and as a medicine for bone loss.

Taste like mustard and have a crunchy texture, this plant is widely found in Cantonese, Japanese, and Korean foods. The crown daisy leaves also make delicious tamabah in soups, stir-fries, hot pots and casseroles dishes.

Plant Characteristics

The Crown Daisy is a glabrescent to glaucous herb that can grow to a height of 20 to 70 cm and has multiple sulcates and branches. The stalk is short with oval leaves up to 8 cm long. The terminal lobe is the largest and there are also lanceolate and oblong lobes. The upper leaves or head are ovoid, pinnate in shape and smaller.

Health Benefits of Crown Daisy

Crown daisy is not only limited to ornamental plant, but it also has many health benefits so it is also known as herbal plant. It is barren for several nutrients such as minerals and vitamins. Among them is potassium which is useful for neutralizing blood pressure. The content of vitamin C, vitamin B complex, carotene and iron. Carotene functions as an antioxidant which is useful for reducing the risk of lung cancer. In addition, this plant also contains bio-active compounds that help absorption of nutrients, including Benzaldhyde and Alpha-pinene.

Consuming crown daisy regularly is good for health in preventing fever, headache, cough, inflammation, dry eyes, constipation and microbial infections. And good for preventing arteriosclerosis and avoiding strokes and kidney stones. Below we look at the health benefits of the crown daisy.

1. Lose weight

Chlorogenic acid is a type of hydroxynamic acid, which is found in coffee beans. The function of chlorogenic acid acts in slowing down the release of glucose into the bloodstream after meals so it is great for weight loss. In addition, the crown daisy is a green plant that is low in calories, in a 100 gram dose, it only contains 22 calories. This is a great opportunity to lose weight in your daily diet.

Crown daisy is also rich in fiber which we know is a mineral that is important in the smooth disposal of fat and waste so that it helps the body stay healthy and free from excess fat.

2. Antioxidant activity

The health benefits of the crown daisy are also related to its antioxidant content. Chlorogenic acid also functions as an antioxidant which plays an important role in preventing cell damage (eliminating free radicals) and eliminating damaging molecules that cause heart disease, aging, cancer, and wrinkles or wrinkles. To maintain the anti-oxidant content in crown daisy leaves, so if you cook it, cook it a little bit, not too ripe because it can remove antioxidants.

3. Maintain overall health

Another benefit of consuming crown daisy leaves is to maintain general body health. This is of course due to the large number of nutrients and important compounds in these leaves.

Leaves boiled in an amount of 100 grams, can produce as much as 270 mg of potassium. So, the potassium content is 30% more than consuming bananas in the same amount. What is potassium? Potassium is an essential mineral that is useful and functions in moving nerves and moving muscles. So, without good potassium in the body, nerve impulses cannot move and muscles cannot contract. So, it is stated that a diet high in potassium can prevent hypertension, stroke, kidney stones, and prevent bone loss.

4. Prevent lung cancer

The health benefits of the crown daisy are also related to the lung organs. There is a study on this subject that links vegetables rich in vitamin A and the risk of lung cancer. This research was conducted in Taiwan some time ago.

In the study examined the relationship of vegetables rich in vitamin A with the risk of lung disease. They used a food frequency questionnaire, consuming 13 types of food and vitamin supplements that were tested. In this study, it was found that consuming lots of vitamin A from vegetables can reduce the risk of lung cancer. The crown daisy leaves combined with potatoes are very effective in reducing the risk of lung cancer.

Traditional Uses of Crown Daisy

  • For inflammation, the leaves can be applied topically after being mashed
  • If the tongue is tingling, chew the roots
  • Gonorrhea is usually treated with a mixture of black pepper and crown daisy leaves
  • The bark is used to treat syphilis
  • The benefits of the crown daisy plant can also treat fever, headaches, coughs, microbial infections, dry eyes, constipation, kidney stones and can prevent stroke.
  • It’s also great for loss of appetite
  • Used as a mouthwash for laryngitis
  • Chewing fresh leaves is also good for treating canker sores.
  • Preventive measure
  • The side effect of the crown daisy is mild stomach pain
  • If consumed in excess, there may be side effects
  • If you are allergic to dandelion, daisies, ragweed, sunflower and golden rod, then you should also avoid crown daisy.
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not use this drug because until now the effects are not known.
