Cultivation

For the most part, making jasmine tea is using green tea, but there are also those who use oolong tea, using white or black tea. Meanwhile, the tea leaves are harvested in spring and stored carefully until summer.

In making jasmine tea, there are two types of jasmine that are often used. One of them is Jasminum officinale which is more popularly known as “Common Jasmine” and another is “Jasminum sambac or Sampaguita”. This flower is stored and added to the leaves that have been stored, allowed to soak for hours. Some are even stored for weeks, depending on the skill of the tea masters in the preparation.

Sometimes the infusion of jasmine aroma is repeated several times. This fragrance process is only done a few times for standard jasmine tea types. Meanwhile, for premium and high quality jasmine tea, the roasting process is repeated 9 times. These include Yin Hao and Dragon Pearls.

Loose Leaf, and Pearls, or Tea Bags?

Jasmine tea can be infused using a tea bag, loose leaf or pearl, and matcha. In general, jasmine tea has a delicate flavor profile, so it is advisable to brew it using a tea bag. Because the tea bag contains a lot of broken leaves, tea dust and other residues. And tea debris and dust can affect the flavor of jasmine tea, so it’s best to brew it with a tea bag. So, when choosing a tea bag, choose tea sachets as these are easier for the brew.

Loose Leaf

Loose leaf is the best choice for you to brew your favorite cup of jasmine tea. Loose leaf is very easy to obtain, and can be found in almost every grocery store. Using loose leaf, you only need an infuser so that the flower buds are still there when you brew your tea.

Pearls

Traditionally, jasmine tea was brewed with loose leaf as we described above. However, some jasmine tea is made in rolled pearl form. These are known as Jasmine Dragon Pearls or Jasmine Phoenix Pearls. The pearl jasmine tea is rolled by hand in the shape of small balls. The smell is very strong and it gives warmth to a cup of jasmine tea in the morning.

After the jasmine buds are rolled up, then dry them, then mix them with the jasmine buds. When the buds of jasmine open, they infuse pearls with aroma and taste. In Fujian province, they usually use pearls to brew jasmine tea and add flavor and specialties.

How to Brew Jasmine Tea

1. Choose your jasmine tea

The right jasmine tea depends on your individual taste and how much you want to prepare it. High quality jasmine tea is the same as premium grapes, a long cultivation process that makes this tea more expensive. But the taste is even more amazing, because each process is chosen in such a way. To brew jasmine tea, you also need to pay attention to whether it is pearls or loose-leaf. For loose leaf tea, you can use a full teaspoon for every 8 ounces of water.
