What Causes Your Nose to Get Clogged on One Side?
Why is your nose blocked on one side? Nasal congestion on one side is caused by many factors. Sometimes this happens because you have a cold, or you have allergies and you feel fine.
Speaking of nasal congestion on one side, health expert Anthony Cornetta, MD, a board-certified otolaryngologist at NYU Langone, has listed several causes of nasal congestion on one side, including:
1. Your Normal Nasal Cycle
Based on what Dr. Cornetta that the human nose has its own cycle called the “nose cycle”. Congestion occurs not only in one nose but alternately occurs between the two nostrils. This congestion occurs when the nasal turbinates, the small structures in the nose that are responsible for cleaning and moisturizing the nose, become blocked.
Dr. Cornetta says that the inferior turbine is one of the causes of airflow limitation when there is a blockage. “The turbinate can also be swollen on one side more than the other from allergies.” it needs to be fixed, to fix this, he suggests nasal steroids or antihistamine sprays. But if the problem persists, then contact your Doctor
2. Side Sleeping
It is undeniable that sleeping similar is one of the comfortable and relaxed positions during rest, especially sleeping on the right side with the head to the north and facing the Qibla (as taught by Miracles of Prophet Muhammad PBUH). But what if you have a stuffy nose, maybe you want to change your sleeping position.
The best sleep for those of you who are having problems with nasal congestion is sleeping on a rather high pillow with a reclined position on the pillow.
3. A Deviated Septum
Another cause of blockage of the nostrils on one side is related to the separation between the two nostrils called the septum. If this part has problems such as defects and bends, there will be deviations that occur such as blockage of the nostrils. This happens because when this divider is bent, then one of the nostrils will narrow the hole and it may become blocked due to breathing with a small nose the hole feels difficult or is said to be blocked.
The septum or the dividing wall between the two nostrils is very common to experience crooked alias not straight. Dr. Cornetta said that this barrier should not be associated with trauma. This often occurs during the development of the facial bones. If the cause is this, then repairing the septum requires serious action in the form of surgery. So, if you suspect a crooked septum is the problem with the blockage of one side of your nostril, consult a doctor immediately.
4. Nasal Polyps
Nasal polyps are a common problem and polyps take up space in the nasal cavity causing the nostrils to narrow and this causes blockage of one side of your opening. When polyps enlarge, there will be other symptoms such as pressure on the forehead and loss of smell. Cornetta said that this occurs from allergies, but not all cases of polyps in the background with allergies.
If you experience symptoms such as pressure on the forehead or loss of smell when you feel your nose is blocked on one side, then immediately prepare yourself for a consultation with an ENT specialist. Usually the doctor will prescribe treatment in the form of nasal spray, oral medication or in serious cases sometimes have to do surgery.
