The month of Ramadan brings many benefits and virtues in the lives of Muslims. Not only the positive impact in terms of health but also the month of Ramadan has extraordinary spiritual value. Even Ramadan can change our lives for the better.
The arrival of the month of Ramadan which is full of glory, virtues and benefits should be a great momentum for all to be able to win the promised victory, namely the victory of being a taqwa servant and free from hellfire.
Below we look at some of the great benefits of Ramadan in changing human life for the better.
1. Self-Awareness
When fasting we certainly withhold food and drink and everything that can break the fast. At this time humans will have higher vigilance. He will think more positively, wiser and smarter in attitude. By fasting, a person will also know himself better as a weak creature and there is Allah as the creator (almighty).
Umar ibn Khattab (ra), “Take an account of yourselves before you are taken to account, weigh your deeds before they are weighed.”
Even in the Holy Quran, Allah mentions the importance of a person for self-reflection.
“O you who believe! Fear Allah and keep your duty to Him. And let every person look to what he has sent forth for tomorrow, and fear Allah. Verily, Allah is All-Aware of what you do” [al-Hashr 59:18].
Try to use this self-reflection with positive thoughts. We have to think about traveling on earth which is temporary. But the effect is very large, namely for life in the hereafter which is eternal.
We must be able to make this temporary world a capital to return to eternal life in heaven as the origin of the previous human, namely the prophet Adam (AS). The origin of the prophet Adam (AS) is from heaven, and we humans (as children of Adam) are given the opportunity in this world to worship and serve Allah so that we can then return to heaven. If we are tempted by the tricks of the devil in the world, then we will get lost and cannot get to heaven but to hell with Satan (Iblis). We seek refuge in Allah from this.
2. Relationship with the Quran
The month of Ramadan is an opportunity for us to build our relationship with Allah through reading the Qur’an more. Al-Quran is the revelation of Allah which was sent down to the prophet Muhammad SAW in the month of Ramadan. So, in this month we should be able to increase our enthusiasm to build a relationship with the Koran.
At least, we can khatam (finish reading the Koran) once a month. Allah will give a tremendous reward for people who read the Koran even though he does not understand its meaning.
Al-Quran and prayers to the Prophet SAW. are two things that are rewarded even if we do not understand their meaning.
In the month of Ramadan, we should be able to increase religious spirit. Can keep Allah’s prohibition and carry out His commands.
“O you who believe! Fear Allah and keep your duty to Him. And let every person look to what he has sent forth for tomorrow, and fear Allah. Verily, Allah is All-Aware of what you do” [al-Hashr 59:18].
In addition to multiplying reading the Koran, during Ramadan we should try to study the interpretation of the Koran to more or less know the contents of the Koran. find a teacher who is competent in this matter. Do not take just any teacher because many people do not understand the Koran, but try to interpret it, this is dangerous.
3. Taraweeh Prayers
“Hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. Remember the favor of Allah upon you, when you were enemies and he brought your hearts together and you became brothers by his favour.” [Al Imran 3:103]
One of the beauties of Ramadan is the taraweeh prayer, where the taraweeh prayer, which has a total of 20 raka’at, does not exist on other nights. There are only on the night of Ramadan and this is very much a reward for those who do it.
With taraweeh prayers we are expected to build a more intense brotherhood, we can increase our reward on a night full of blessings.
Abu Hurayrah (ra) said: The Messenger of Allah (saw) used to encourage us to pray at night in Ramadan, without making it obligatory. Then he said, “Whoever prays at night in Ramadan out of faith and the hope of reward, all his previous sins will be forgiven.”

“Wealth will not be decreased by giving to charity. And a forgiving slave must be rewarded by Allah with authority” [Narrated by Muslim].
Alms is one of the acts of worship that is quite rewarding, especially when we do it in the month of Ramadan. If we give charity, our reward will be multiplied by Allah SWT. By giving charity we will not lack wealth. Even charity can be the cause of our sustenance being facilitated.
The month of Ramadan is a very good moment for worship including giving charity. We can give charity by giving money to the needy, or by buying food to break the fast. Masha Allah this is very beautiful and a very big reward is given by Allah to His servants who want to give alms.
“Indeed, Allah the Exalted is the Giver, He love generosity and noble manners, He detest bad manners.” (Narrated by Al Baihaqi]
May Allah give us all the opportunity to experience the joys of Ramadan this year and in the years to come. May Allah give us blessings in the month of Rajab, Sha’ban and Allah give us the opportunity to meet again with one great month, the month of Ramadan.
