Tut Wuri Handayani is a fragment from the words of the father of education in Indonesia, Ki Hajar Dewantoro. That is only the last part of the sentence uttered by him.

The sentence that was spoken is now the department of education and culture of Indonesia. The complete sentence is “Ing Ngarso Sun Tuladha, Ing Madya Mangun Karso, Tut Wuri Handayani”, which means more or less “which is in front of exemplary, in the middle of guiding, motivating and behind encouraging or providing moral support.

This sentence is a guide for those who talk about leadership, because it explains how an educator acts, behaves towards his students so that they become role models and examples.

Ki Hajar Dewantoro is the father of Indonesian Education who first laid the foundation of education in the country and he was the first minister of Education, Teaching and Culture.

Tut Wuri Handayani is a form of teaching about leadership from Ki Hadjar Dewantara, even his speech in the form of “Tut Wuri Handayani” has become the motto in the world of education until now.

Meaning of Tut Wuri Handayani

If we look from the language side, “Tut Wuri” is following from behind, while “Handayani” is giving examples, encouragement, and encouragement from behind. Encouragement in the form of enthusiasm and motivation from behind is something that is very important for the continued development of those who need enthusiasm in living this life.

If the two words are combined, the meaning could be: Someone has to give encouragement and enthusiasm from behind.

The meaning of Tut Wuri Handayani or in full is “ing ngarsa sung tulada, ing madya building karsa, tut wuri handayani” this can be described as the principle of independence

Tut Wuri Handayani implies the meaning of the principle of independence. The meaning of Tut Wuri Handayani is to follow behind and not teach others. This principle of independence is very important in assessing the stability of a person.

If we describe this principle of independence in the scope of education, it means that the school becomes the provider of education that will make each individual independent. That is why tut wuri handayani is a symbol in the world of education.

Meaning of Tutwuri Handayani – Ing Ngarso Sun Tulodo – Ing Madyo Mangun Karso – A person must help others in terms of providing motivation and encouragement from behind. If interpreted in the context of school or education, the motto of tut wuri handayani is more about the role of the teacher in encouraging students to learn.

History of Tut Wuri Handayani

If we remember the history of the beginnings of education in Indonesia, of course we will focus our thoughts on a person whose name has now been crowned as a National hero, namely Ki Hajar Dewantara. A father of education as well as the founder of the student garden.

The purpose of establishing a student park educational institution was to make a partnership on the development of Dutch colonial education. Not only that, the more important purpose of education is to educate the nation, to make the nation aware of colonialism, either physically or through cultural colonization.

Talking about the history of Tut Wuri Handayani, of course Ki Hajar Dewantar was the first to initiate it. he was also the first to establish Taman Siswa on July 3, 1922. Ki hajar dewantara’s real name was Raden Soewardi Soejaningrat.
