Do you like watching horror movies? Usually women really like to watch horror films. Is that right? Ok, actually what horror movie goers are looking for is fear. You watch horror films to be afraid, the proof is that if the movies you watch are not scary, then you are certainly disappointed and feel unattractive.

When viewed from the point of view of the general purpose of making horror films is to entertain like other films. But did you know that watching horror films has health benefits and there are also bad effects and bad effects on your health. Let us look further, what are the benefits and bad effects of horror films for human health.

Horror Movie Reviews from Health side

A communication professor from Purdue University makes an observation of how horror films can affect viewers. What happens when someone watches a horror film? It turns out that when someone watches a horror film, what happens is an increase in heart rate up to 15 times per minute.

Jam, it also occurs in other things such as muscle tension, blood pressure increases, body temperature decreases and there is also sweat through the palms of the hands. Things like this are likely the result of a fight-or-flight such as a stress response. Body temperature decreases due to decreased blood flow to organs other than the heart and muscles.

A glimpse of the professor’s observation, the human body reacts to horror films, namely to the feelings caused by the film. So, is the body’s reaction like good for health or bad for health? There has been a lot of research on the impact of horror films. Some of the studies have shown good results for health and some have shown unfavorable results.

Ok, because there are differences from the results of the horror film research, let’s see an explanation of the good and bad effects of horror films for body health.

Benefits of Watching Horror Movies for Health

1. Good for brain health

Why is it good for brain health? It is necessary to know that watching horror movies makes a person’s brain release compounds such as dopamine, serotonin, and glutamate. So the release of these compounds can cause an adrenaline rush and have a drug-like effect. This is said to be good for mental health because the release of these compounds can relieve stress and can reduce anxiety levels.

2. Useful as a catharsis

When you watch a horror movie all you want is the feeling of fear, surprise and something different or something that you haven’t felt before. Eat it when the horror movie you watch can’t make you afraid, so you feel that the film seems good and not interesting.

According to Mark Griffiths, a professor of addictive behavior from Nottingham Trent University, explained that this happens because horror movie audiences are looking for something different and have never felt in their lives. In addition, watching horror films can function as a catharsis in the form of releasing emotional feelings as a result of frustration or latent desires that never materialize.

You see, when you are stressed and upset about something, of course you want to find an outlet so you can find your pleasure again. One of the advantages could be watching horror films, which is why this film is good for mental health.

3. Can increase immunity

The next benefit of watching horror film is to increase immunity. It sounds a little strange, but it has been scientifically proven that watching horror films is good for the body’s resistance to disease.

Coventry University has conducted a study on this, they took blood samples of people who watched horror films before, while watching and after watching. The result, there is an increase in white blood cells. This proves that this is good for immunity because white blood cells usually increase when there is an infection.

This is confirmed by Natalie Riddell, an immunologist at University College London. He said that watching horror films can boost adrenaline which can have an effect on immunity.

4. Burn Calories

Burning calories is not only with exercise, but it turns out that one of the benefits of watching horror films is that it can burn calories. Wow, this can be good news for those of you who are overweight, because just watching horror movies can burn calories.

The University of Westminster conducted a study that watching horror films for 90 minutes that can stimulate adrenaline will burn the body’s calories as much as 113 calories. That is, this is the same as the number of calories burned when you walk for 30 minutes. So, the scarier the movie you watch, the higher your adrenaline will be, and this makes more calories burn.

Bad Effects of Watching Horror Movies for Health

Apart from getting the health benefits of watching horror films, there are also bad effects or bad effects on health. Let’s take a look at the bad health effects of watching horror movies.

1. Increase the risk of blood clots

One of the bad effects of watching horror films is that it increases the potential for blood clots as studied by Leiden University in 2015. This study was conducted on 24 samples of people who watched horror films by taking their respective blood before watching, and after watching.

The study found that after watching horror films, the blood experienced an increase in blood clotting protein or factor VIII, which means that it causes a risk of blood clots.

However, the potential for blood clots that occur as a result of watching horror films has nothing to do with other diseases such as stroke and others. That is, the creepiness that is felt for a while causes the risk of blood clots. So, not dealing with other illnesses and watching horror movies do not cause blood clots.

The researchers say that the blood clots could be the result of the body’s response to fear in order to avoid losing too much blood. So, it seems like watching horror movies can’t really harm the body.

2. Increase the risk of heart disease

It cannot be denied that watching horror movies can cause serious heart problems and even someone can die from heart disease, especially for those with a history of heart disease.

Fear and stress when watching horror movies can trigger adrenaline hormones which in turn cause blood vessels to constrict so that the heart has to work extra to pump blood. If someone has heart disease and is afraid when watching horror films, then that thirst can be dangerous to their health.

In 2015, a cardiologist from the University of Maryland, stated that watching horror films can cause endothelium. This is a condition of narrowing of the blood vessels. If narrowing of the blood vessels occurs, the heart pressure or pressure will also increase.
