What is Narrative Text

Narrative text is text that describes an event with its interrelated chronology. The texts are usually just imaginative writings or inventions by the author with the aim of providing entertainment to the reader.

Characteristics
The text that describes an event with its chronology, then how do we signify and know that the text is narrative. There are characteristics that can be learned so that we understand better this explanation.
Here are some characteristics of narrative text:
- Tells events in the past
- It is popular as a folk tale or has been popular as a well-known story, although the story can be retold in various versions
- The story consists of time setting, place, story theme, story character, story atmosphere, conflict and resolution.
It can be structured in one simple sequence or in several complex sequences.
Generic Structure of Narrative Text
Generic structure of the text are some of the usual stages and steps in making a story or story. It can also be understood as a way to produce this text, here we will look at the stages in making narrative text.
1. Orientation
This is the part that introduces the story with an introduction to the characters, the time and place the events in the story will be narrated and other related matters.
2. Complication
This is the part when the problem about the main character in the story begins to appear and be told.

3. Resolution
The resolution in the step of making narrative text is the part where the story of the main character tries to solve the problem, or it can also be said to be the final part of the story or story.
In order to better understand the arrangement of the steps above, let’s look at the following example of narrative text that we have created.
Example of Narrative Text
1. Once upon a time, there was a frog who fought over the daughter of a king
2. In ancient times, there was an old grandmother who lived alone in the middle of the forest.
3. One day, there was a large anaconda snake waiting for its prey behind the house.
If you pay attention, there is a word in bold in the sentence above, this is a sign that the events in the narrative text occurred in the past.
Characteristics of Language in Narrative Text
In making narrative text, there are six characteristics that must be present.
- Use a time marker
- The language used is a storytelling style so that it seems informal and easy for the listener to digest
- It uses various punctuation marks, and various types of words such as nouns, adjectives, adverbs and verbs.
- The verb used is passive and active
- Contains a narrative story, such as dialogue, help, etc.
- The sentence that is made does not always consist of a subject, predicate, object and description.
