Dry Mouth when Pregnant – During pregnancy, usually someone will experience dry mouth, what about you, and what do you do when you experience dry mouth during pregnancy. Maybe not many people talk about dry mouth during pregnancy because it’s not like any other pregnancy symptom.

This dry feeling sometimes accompanies nausea and other side effects of pregnancy, is this related to hormonal changes during pregnancy or not?

Based on information from the American Dental Association, hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause a person to experience a lack of body fluids and this will affect the condition of the mouth. This condition in medical terms is called xerostomia.

Dry mouth during pregnancy not only makes you uncomfortable but can also make oral health problems worse. If the mouth lacks fluids and saliva, then it will not be optimal in maintaining oral health, meaning that this condition is prone to tartar and cavities.

If so important to avoid dry mouth, then how to deal with dry mouth during pregnancy? We will discuss this in this article!

How to Get Rid of Dryness

The easiest and most effective way to prevent and get rid of dry mouth is to increase your fluid intake, so during pregnancy you should increase the amount of water you drink to keep the body hydrated. You can try sucking on ice chips to moisten your mouth, but this method can also prevent nausea during pregnancy.

During pregnancy, if you are one who suffers from dry mouth, you can take a bottle of water with you wherever you go, also add sugar-free gum so that your mouth will remain moist and away from dryness. Chewing gum can stimulate saliva to keep your mouth moist.

In addition, as long as you sleep at night you can turn on the humidifier. Try talking to your dentist, sometimes there is a mouthwash that can be a solution to prevent dry mouth during pregnancy. Among the mouthwashes that you can try are Colgate Dry Mouth Relief or a saliva substitute.

Dental Care for Pregnant Women and Nutrition

Oral health including teeth and gums is important, especially if you are entering a period of pregnancy. Dry mouth may be a problem that generally occurs in pregnant women. But without paying attention to this, pregnant women have the potential to experience other serious health problems such as pregnancy gingivitis and pregnancy granuloma (2 to 10% of pregnant women experience it, this is the growth of the gum line in pregnant women).

One way to maintain health is to brush your teeth twice a day using toothpaste that contains fluoride and use dental floss or floss to clean your teeth optimally at least once a day. The thing that everyone understands and understands is to eat healthy food. Healthy food is not only beneficial for pregnancy health but also provides many benefits for your oral health.

Among the healthy vegetables that all nutrition experts agree are green leafy vegetables, carrots, milk, nuts, they are foods that can help you in maintaining your oral health, whether during pregnancy or not. Milk (for example) contains calcium, vitamins A, and C which are quite important and beneficial for dental health.

In addition, the way to maintain dental health during pregnancy is to minimize the consumption of sweet and starchy foods or rich in carbohydrates. Sugary foods are very bad for teeth because they can cause tooth decay. Conversely, low-sugar and low-carb foods are good for health because they can inhibit the growth of bacteria that damage teeth.

In addition, during your pregnancy it is also important to visit the dentist, at least once during your pregnancy or in the 9 months. The best time to visit the dentist is when your pregnancy is in the second trimester. (See too: First Trimester Diet: Foods To Eat and To Avoid in Pregnancy Week 1-12)
