What Is Halibut Fish and its health benefits? Halibut fish are inhabitants of the pacific ocean. Scientifically called Hippoglossus stenolepis. It is a flat fish that belongs to the Pleuronectidae family. This fish is flat with a brown to gray top and a white underside. Halibut fish have two different sides of the body, the eyes are on the right side on the top or the dark side. Its body is smooth like a diamond, and its fine scales like diamonds make this fish like a pearl. With a wide and symmetrical tail, the Halibut fish can grow up to 500 pounds in weight and up to 8 feet long.

Halibut fish eat cod, pollock, octopus, turbot, shrimp, eel, crab, lamprey, and sculpins. The breeding period for Hippoglossus stenolepis is from December to February. Because of this life in the Pacific ocean it is called Pacific halibut, Alaska Halibut, Halibut, Hippos of the Sea, Chicken Halibut, Cow of the Sea, and Hirame. The name of this fish comes from the words “haly” and “butte”, which means the fish is holy and flat.

Before we look at what the health benefits of halibut fish are, let’s take a look at its nutritional value below.

Nutritional Value

Cooked halibut fish with a size of 159 grams provides 176 calories of nutrition, 121.03 grams of moisture, 35.84 grams of protein, 2.5 grams of ash and 2.56 grams of total lipid fat. Still with the same portion, this already provides nutritional value of 160.18% of selenium, 110.35% of lysine, 110.77% of isoleucine, 102.27% of tryptophan, 98.01% of valine, 100.11% of threonine, 96.19% of histidine, 84.17% of cobalamine , 88.39% of leucine, 78.61% of niacin, 71.68% of protein, 77.31% of pyridoxine, 65.14% of phosphorus, 17.87% of potassium, 10.71% of magnesium, 21.71% of choline, and provides 13.22% of Vitamin B5.

Health Benefits of Halibut fish

Halibut fish is a fish that provides a lot of omega 3 fatty acids which are useful for cardiovascular protection. Another benefit is to maintain the balance and stability of HDL and LDL. Halibut fish is also useful for preventing atherosclerosis, arteries clotting, lower triglycerides, high blood pressure, inflammation and preventing strokes.

The Pacifik halibut also contains magnesium which is beneficial for veins and arteries to stay relaxed and healthy, because it improves blood flow and carries oxygen throughout the body. Halibut is delicious grilled, baked, or broiled.

1. Healthy cells

Consuming halibut fish provides many benefits to maintain the health of body cells. This fish provides a lot of vitamin B12 which plays an important role in repairing damaged body cells. It also plays a role in forming and maintaining red blood cells. So, the benefits are also felt in maintaining nerve health.

2. Eliminate fatigue

If you are tired and weak, you can consume this nutrient-rich Pacific halibut. The nutrients in this fish provide relief from fatigue and weakness. One of the benefits of vitamin B12 is maintaining stamina and improving body health.

3. Supports digestion

Halibut fish also contains vitamin B3 which is beneficial for the digestive system. The benefits of halibut fish, if consumed regularly, can stimulate appetite, maintain nervous health and make skin glow.

4. Lowering cholesterol

Cholesterol is the cause of chronic diseases such as heart, cardiovascular disease and even stroke and high blood pressure. The content of vitamin b3 in halibut fish is useful for increasing good cholesterol (HDL) and lowering bad cholesterol. Consuming this unique fish can prevent thickening of the artery walls and prevent atherosclerosis.

5. Good for Enhancing immunity

Halibut fish is also rich in Pyridoxine. The benefit of pyridoxine is that it plays a role in boosting immunity. If the body does not get this substance, the body can become a victim of various diseases. Immunity is very important so that the body is resistant to various attacks by foreign bodies and harmful micro-organisms such as bad bacteria, viruses and fungi.

Apart from containing phosphorus, halibut fish is also rich in potassium which is useful for brain health. Halibut fish nutrition is useful for improving brain function and maintaining healthy memory. If potassium is deficient in the body, serious problems such as epilepsy will occur.

  • This fish is not good for pregnant women because it contains high mercury.
  • Halibut contains purines, which are substances that can cause diseases such as kidney stones, gout and kidney problems. So, consuming this fish must be careful not to overdo it.
  • People who are allergic to this fish should avoid consuming it.
