What Is Korean Japchae?
We are going to make Japchae, what exactly is this japchae? This is Korean food, besides Korean street food you can try sweet potato glass noodles or Japchae. It is a mixed meal of several vegetables, but is often served with added meat.
This recipe diverges from the traditional recipe from two sides:
- We swap beef for well seasoned tofu.
- We added some spices to the mix, and this is not in the traditional recipe.
Why Not Make Japchae Using Beef?
Actually, you can make it with beef, but the budget will swell. So the alternative is to use substitute materials.
This recipe we serve uses vegetables, and 350 grams of tofu and it costs just: CAD $14.27 ($2.38/serving) for 6 large main dishes.
While a Japchae recipe with vegetables and 1 pound flank marinating steak will cost you about CAD $24.66 ($4.11/serving), we’re already using wholesale prices for beef purchases. Well, you know how much you save!
Tofu if not seasoned, it will have the same taste as meat that is not seasoned, it tastes bland and does not tempt the taste buds. So, for this reason we add seasonings for flavor enrichment.
We use spices such as:
- Soy sauce, or tamari,
- Maple syrup
- Ginger, dan
- Chilli Garlic Sauce for the spicy taste.
To make it more delicious and give its own sensation, you can add a little spicy sauce or garlic chili sauce. Just a little already gives a cool roma and flavor.
As an alternative to garlic chili sauce, you can use chili powder flakes or chop Thai chilies in half, this will give a hot sensation. We have a lot of Thai red chilies in the Freezer, this should always be there because there are many dishes that can be savored with Thai chilies. By freezing Thai chili, you can take one by one whenever you need.
