Touch Me Not Plant Benefits – This plant also called as a sensitive plant that known in scientific language as Mimosa pudica is a perennial or perennial plant that grows creeping on the ground. This sensitive plant has many names. Among the names are Touch-me-not, Sensitive Grass, Shame Face, Shame Bush, TickleMe Plant, Shame Lady, common sensitive-plant, Shame Weed, shameplant, Sleeping grass, Shy plant, and Prayer Plant. Sensitive plants or mimosa are included in the taxonomic grop Magnoliopsida and family Mimosaseae.

It is native to North America and South America. However, the development is very far because until now this plant can be found in various countries including Southeast Asia, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh, India, Philippines, Laos, Cambodia and Sri Lanka and even Japan. The word “mimosa” comes from the Greek “mimicos” which means mimic “or” counterfeit “. While in Latin it is called “mimus” which means abundant. This shows the abundance of flowers. Meanwhile, the word “pudica” comes from a Latin word which means “simple or timid”. This sensitive plant grows a lot under trees, in the shade or in places that are humid and lacking sunlight.

Getting to Know Touch Me Not Plant

Sensitive plant grows low, it only grows to a height of 15 to 100 cm, even then it must hold or propagate on other plants. The stems are prickly and even thorny all over the body including the stalks and the undersides of the leaves. If touched, the leaves that were originally open will close by themselves. This is why this plant is called Touch me Not, or known as a sensitive plant.

Plant roots are cylindrical, tapered, and very strong growing in the soil. This plant likes moist and shady areas such as empty gardens, under shady tamarind trees, on roadside fences, and in grasslands. The leaves are green like the leaves of a tamarind tree and the color of the trunk is reddish brown.

The trunk is woody at the base, cylindrical, stiff, reddish brown and purple. As long as the stems are prickly, even under the leaves are prickly. Thorns about 3-4 mm long, curved, dense, hard and sharp. If you are stepped on you will be shocked because you are stabbed by a thorn.

Leaf Characteristics

The leaves of the sensitive plant or Touch Me Not are similar to the leaves of the tamarind tree, but they are hairy and bipinnate. The leaves are arranged parallel and in pairs like palmate. The petiole is about 2.5 cm long, while the pinnae oanjang is 2.5-5 cm. There are 12-50 leaflets, each about 6-12 mm long. Leaf width about 1.5 mm.

The tops of the leaves are smooth and smooth while the edges look a bit hairy. When touched, the leaf leaf immediately closes itself and the petiole immediately loosens or bends downward. However, before long, he re-opened himself and was strong as before. But once you touch it again, the leaves will spontaneously close again.

Flower

The flowers are pink and slightly purplish. In the middle there are 4 stamens and grow on the head of the bull with a size of 9 mm. The petals have 4 labus with a length of 2 mm. The length of the stalk is about 12-25 mm, while the corolla is 2 to 2.3 mm long. Mimosa Pudica flowers will bloom from August to October.

The flowers provide joy, especially when the flower season is where the garden filled with shy daughter plants will spread the flowers. But don’t try to step on it or pick the flowers, because the sharp spines will make you regret it.

Types

Until now this sensitive plant is only known for three varieties. Two types exist in West Africa. They are both varieties of hispida with stipules 8-14 mm long and one is var. also with long spots of about 4-8 mm.

USDA-NRCS (2008) shows that var. uni is also found in Hawaii, while the one in the USA and in Puerto Rico is variety pudica.
